About us

Runnymede Muslim Society

We are a group of Muslim professionals, seeking to improve relations with our neighbours in the wider British society. We want to remove the negative perceptions, the fear and suspicion. We believe that there is only one way to earn respect for Islam and Muslims. We have to set a good personal example, working patiently, sincerely, side-by-side with others, to improve their living conditions and thereby to earn their trust.

Since 1995 we have held our congregational prayers (Jumu’ah, Taraweeh and Eid) on the campus at Royal Holloway University and at the Catholic Jurgens Centre in Englefield Green. We have also helped the University by providing speakers on Islam. We helped to find and fund a Muslim Chaplain on the campus. Our volunteers have worked with Christian groups in collecting and distributing emergency supplies to refugees, and recently to survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in London. We have thus cultivated good neighbourly relations with the wider community over a long period of time.

In December 2017 the Runnymede Muslim Society was duly registered by the Charities Commission (Registration no. 1176152). Previously we were known as the Islamic Welfare Association of West Surrey (IWAWS).

We changed our name (now it’s shorter and easier on the tongue) and legal status. As a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation), we seek to comply with all the legal requirements and safeguards for our sponsors and for the community we serve.

Our venue

Most of our activities take place at the Jurgens Centre in Englefield Green. We previously held functions at the Royal Holloway University of London campus on the A30 London Road in Egham, or the Egham Youth Centre. We are working hard to find a more permanent property to make our home.

Our origins

Our Association was formed in 1981, to serve the Muslim community in and around Royal Holloway University of London. Many of our founding members are still active and live in the surrounding areas.

Charity status

Runnymede Muslim Society is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Our charity number is 1176152.
